Dog Club April 27th, 2011

This month's MRHMS Dog Club was a huge success!  On this club day, we welcomed 9 furry friends, 6 APA employees/volunteers, 3 teachers, 11 students, and one amazing learning opportunity about jobs involving animals!


We learned so much this day...especially in regards to different careers you can have with animals.  The MRHMS students listened intently about the different jobs, and asked some really awesome questions!  All this was happening while surrounded by 9 furry friends in one room.



The students got to play a game where they try and guess what animal job it is when hearing a description and looking at one of their peers dressed up in a costume.  I had no idea there were so many jobs involving animals!  I know the students learned a lot from this about different careers and job opportunities there are with animals--and for people with all types of education backgrounds.




 We also got to take the pooches on a nice long walk around MRH.  The students got to show off what they've learned so far in Dog Club this school year about the proper way and technique to walk a dog.  They did such an awesome job!




All in all, it was a great Dog Club day!  A big HUGE thanks to our friends at the APA for coming out and bringing a bunch of furry friends for us to meet!  We had a blast!

Model UN General Assembly

On Tuesday, April 26th eight students from MRHMS traveled to the Creve Coeur government center to participate in the Civitas Model UN General Assembly. After working for one day a week after school all year, the 7th and 8th grade students were ready to present their resolution--Human Trafficking--to the General Assembly.







MRHMS's delegates from Niger and Madagascar got up and presented their resolution.







After fielding questions and proposed amendments to their resolution, there was a vote for whether the General Assembly would sponsor (pass) the resolution or not...and...




The votes were cast...and the resolution passed! Woo hoo! All that hard work paid off! Yipee! The students got to see what the UN really does and how a General Assembly works. They learned a lot and the participation was amazing! They had to limit the comments the countries were allowed to submit because so many were participating! It was so awesome to see such interest in human rights and world problems.

Establishing in the PREAMBLE the principles that apply in this resolution:

Whereas Article 3 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.”, and

Whereas Article 4 of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all forms.”, and

Whereas Article 23, section 1 `of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS states, “Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favorable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.”


Stating in PREAMBLE the problems that exist:

Understanding that it has been estimated that there are twenty-seven-million people in slavery worldwide today, 800,000 of which were taken to a foreign country, and that one-million minors are exploited by the global commercial sex trade every year. On a yearly basis, thirty-two-billion dollars are profited by the human trafficking industry.

Be It Hereby Resolved That the General Assembly:

1. The United Nations will begin a program called End All Trafficking Now (EATN), the goal of which is to enforce laws against the trafficking of human persons.

2. EATN will take place in Niger, USA, and China because they are three of the countries that have the highest human trafficking rate.

3. EATN will create a program that educates people in Niger, USA and China that educates people about human trafficking and how much of an issue it is.

4. In addition, EATN, through the educational programs, will help raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking around the world.

5. EATN’s education programs will have educators that go to Niger, USA, and China. They will be intended to educate men, women, and young-middle aged children about the rising issue of human trafficking.In countries, like the USA, that have a lot of slaves being exported, EATN will educate the counties to help keep slaves from being taken.

6. EATN will build shelters, in countries like Niger and China, that have a lot of slaves coming in so if they try to escape, they would have somewhere to go. The UN will provide law enforcement for the purpose of stopping the trade, and enslavement of humans.

7. EATN will last for 2 years. At that time the program will be evaluated by the general assembly and if successful can be renewed and expanded to other countries with trafficking problems.

8. The UN will raise dues for all countries by 1% raising over 27 million dollars a year.

Rockin' Exploration Websites

My students are just wrapping up their exploration unit this week.  We've literally been in this unit since we got back from winter break in January, so it's nice to be able to move into our next and final unit of the year, which is colonization.

Here are some pics of my 7th graders working hard on their sites:





However, I want to share some AMAZING websites my 7th graders just finished creating for exploration.  They were each given a website template (using Google sites and their school Gmail accounts) and a topic that we'd covered in exploration.  They then were turned loose to create a site about their topic, making sure to include all of the site requirements outlined on the template site.  I was just amazed as to what these students came up with!  Some took to other sites, such as xtranormal.com or goanimate.com to create animations about their exploration topic instead of just typing the information.  Anyways, their sites turned out great...and I wanted to share with you the site I created to house all of the students' exploration sites.  So check out the link below and enjoy!
