Tremont Expedition

Whew!  What an amazing expedition and week at Tremont at the Great Smoky Mountain Institute!  The 7th graders had an amazing time and showcased what great learners and outdoor abilities they have!

For some this was their first experience out of the state or outdoors in the wilderness, and oh boy!  They did not let any of that stand in their way.  Students--whether it was their first time or fiftieth in the woods--dove right in and immersed themselves in nature.  They all became citizen scientists with helping the Tremont staff with their Tree phenology and Salamander ecology studies.

All of the students amazed themselves (and their teachers!) by completing the entire 8 mile hike through the Smokies.

They all learned how to read a topographical map and navigate through the woods.  Complaining was almost an non-entity; students participated fully and enjoyed all that they were learning and engaged with.

All in all, this was a fantastic week of expedition, learning, and growing.  These 7th graders are amazing, and continue to amaze me every day with all of the things they are capable of and can do.  I look forward to getting to spend another year with these incredible students!
